Discussing the largest vehicular network in the world
Within the Future Cities Project (www.futurecities.up.pt) – an European project that is building a ‘living lab’ in Porto – the University of Aveiro, University of Porto, and industrial partners developed the largest vehicular network in the world. More than 400 city buses are now interconnected.
In order to present and discuss the testbed, as well as providing different examples around the world regarding vehicular networks, the Future Cities Project has held the Workshop on Vehicular Networks and Sustainable Mobility Testbed.
On the last April 24, several experts gathered at the Municipality of Porto to debate themes related to vehicular communications, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) and sustainable mobility, showcasing the Porto Living Lab as an example of the improvement of mobility in the cities.
The opening of the workshop has been performed by Susana Sargento from the University of Aveiro and Institute of Telecommunications, and a member of the Future Cities Project.
Katrin Sjöberg – an ITS research engineer from Volvo Group Trucks Technology in Sweden and a connected vehicle technology specialist – was the keynote speaker. She addressed the issues of connected vehicles, Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS), standardization and road traffic safety.
The workshop also included the participation of several partners and institutions involved in the testbed, such as Rui Costa from Veniam, Alexandre Sousa from Porto Digital, Bruno Eugénio from the Municipality of Porto, and Tânia Calçada from the Future Cities Project.
